Addressing the pressing issues that come with emergence of (new) technologies, this event will bring together researchers and liberals in the field to discuss what Europe’s digital future should look like.

Algorithms increasingly become part of government policy, ranging from social security, education and healthcare to policing. This digitalization poses great opportunities, such as efficiency gains but also comes with threats to liberal values such as individual freedom and autonomy, equality of opportunity, and rule of law. For digitalization to benefit individuals and societies, European liberals should join forces to make sure that the use of algorithms is in line with liberal values.

Three panelists and a group of experts will share their expertise on the topic. Confirmed panelists are Ann Cathrin Riedel, chairwoman of LOAD e. V. – Association for Liberal Internet Policy – and manager Digital Transformation and Innovation at the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung, and Dr. Darian Meacham, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Principal Investigator for Ethics and Responsible Innovation at the BISS Institute.

The new research paper ‘Algorithms and Local Government. Opportunity for everyone?’ of the European Liberal Forum and the Mr. Hans van Mierlo Foundation will also be presented during the event.

This roundtable will be held in English and via Zoom.
