/////// M:OED is working on a new start M:OED was founded in 2017 because we are convinced that Maastricht can become much more attractive for all its residents. However, after a successful and energetic start in 2018, M:OED was unable to shape the discussion about the future of Maastricht, both within and outside the council. One of the reasons for this is the fact that Alexander Lurvink, as party chairman of M:OED, did not appear to be able to stand out from the crowd. Alexander has meant a lot to M:OED and made a major contribution to the party's ideas, but for us he is not the right man in the right place at the moment. The general assembly therefore asked him to make his position available and to continue to make his contribution to M:OED in another role. However, Alexander has decided not to make his council seat available and to continue in the council. In response, the party withdrew its confidence in him and terminated his membership. This means we no longer see Alexander Lurvink as a representative of M:OED in the Maastricht City Council. Of course our main goal remains to be the initiator of the discussion about renewal in Maastricht. In the coming period we will discuss how we can shape this in a better way. Everyone is more than welcome to participate.

Maastricht has a new hitchhiker/car-sharing meeting spot! We would like to thank Stichting Nederland Lift for their initiative, our colleagues from Partij Veilig Maastricht and alderman Gert-Jan Krabbendam for their collaboration. Also, we appreciate the open-mindset of BlaBlaCar.com for joining us in experimenting how a municipality can foster carpooling solutions. We take this as a proof of concept that politics doesn’t have to be a zero-sum game. Quite the contrary... #sharingiscaring #wackyraces

M:OED joined the Climate March ...

M:OED M:OED Maastricht 15-03-2019 13:01

M:OED joined the Climate March today. We marched to protest the hypocrisy of national politics, capitalizing on environmental issues but lacking the courage to enact real meaningful change. We call upon all citizens, all stakeholders of humanity to join our effort, the defining civil rights issue of our time. Marching one day is a beginning. We can do so much more, and as M:OED, we invite everyone to participate in the policy-making process and take matters in your own hands! Come with your ideas, with your insights, your passion and energy. There is plenty of work to do, and only through a collaborative and inclusive approach can we propose the systemic change our world so direly needs! We count on you. Today, people showed us why. #welcomethefuture #jointhemovement

The local cabinet had civil servants ...

M:OED M:OED Maastricht 15-02-2019 16:06

The local cabinet had civil servants and labor union officials interrogated in the cellars of the town hall and issued an illegal dragnet of over 40 email accounts as a part of an attempt to crackdown on a single whistleblower. On Tuesday and Wednesday evening, the City Council met in a special sitting to debate this matter. In the early hours of Thursday night, after a second day, not much had changed. There was no public apology and the executive board has made it difficult to get all the facts straight. Threatening with dismissal and putting civil servants under pressure seems to be a normal course of action within our city. Let it be clear that M:OED does not accept that. In the words of Simona Maassen: "How can trust be rebuilt if one is only busy with rationalizing everything away? The actions of this Board are inadequate." We then decided in good consultation with the other opposition parties to submit a motion of censure (disapproval) against the executive board. Unfortunately, as expected, this was not adopted since the coalition lacked the self-critical ability to look at the basis of this case. No, instead they have supported each other so that they can continue with the practices for which our city is becoming known. The city government has been given the opportunity to say NO to intimidation and espionage, NO to fear, NO to abuse of power and NO to further escalation, but disregarded this opportunity.
