“Do the Woo” Finds Its Home at WordPress.com

Democraten NU Democraten NU Almelo 19-03-2024 13:14

Bob Dunn loved designing, but didn’t fancy himself a coder. In the early 2000s, while struggling to create a website for his business, he thought to himself, “There’s got to be something better.” When Bob discovered WordPress in 2006, he realized he had discovered that better solution. With WordPress, he could build great-looking sites from scratch without needing to hand-code the entire thing.

In 2010, Bob dove headfirst into the world of WordPress, officially putting his print design business on the backburner and branding himself as “BobWP.” What started as site designing, consulting, and community building would eventually turn into podcasting. But it wasn’t until he discovered WooCommerce that he felt he’d really found his niche.

Bob had used WooCommerce as a product since its launch and saw a need within the larger WordPress community for a Woo-dedicated space to bring developers, builders, and agencies together. Do the Woo was born, and Bob began his journey to create a podcast voiced by and for the vibrant WooCommerce and WordPress communities.

As Do the Woo has grown to fourteen unique shows with dozens of co-hosts and countless guests over the years, Bob has been looking for the right online space to call home. He needed a website host that would allow him to easily maintain and market his podcast, allowing him to focus on the community-centered content that makes his podcast so valuable. He found that home at WordPress.com, where he’s been able to utilize a variety of back-end tools to help create a simple and welcoming front-end user experience.

The teams here at WordPress.com, Woo, and Jetpack are proud to partner with Bob. Do the Woo is providing an essential resource to the Woo and WordPress communities. Not only is he creating a unique space for these conversations to happen, but he’s amplifying the voices of those who want to give podcasting a shot. And take heed, velvet-voiced folks out there: he’s always looking for co-hosts!

Hot Off the Press: New WordPress.com Themes for December 2023

Democraten NU Democraten NU Almelo 18-12-2023 15:47

The WordPress.com team is always working on new design ideas to bring your website to life. Check out the latest themes in our library, including new release Twenty Twenty-Four, as well as a number of other beautiful and versatile designs.

Twenty Twenty-Four (aka TT4), WordPress’s brand new default theme, is now available! TT4 is designed to be flexible, versatile, and applicable to any website—whether running a business, writing a blog, or showcasing work.

This beautiful theme comes with a number of style variations and full-page patterns to help speed up the site-building process; it is fully compatible with the Site Editor and takes advantage of all the new design tools introduced in WordPress 6.4.

Issue is a magazine-style theme designed to make blog content more inviting. Its simple homepage displays large featured images and post titles only, with sticky menu navigation that allows users to access pages (or lists of posts) independently. The minimalist layout and generous white space on individual posts gives this theme a modern feel, while still being visually striking.

Carnation is a minimalist blog theme featuring a classic two-column layout, designed to showcase your content with understated elegance. The homepage emphasizes big featured images to draw in visitors. In the single post/page view, we decided to do something different and not include the featured images at all. Large images often take over the most valuable space near the top of the post/page, which we really wanted to dedicate to content alone in this theme. For any writers tackling Bloganuary this year, Carnation is a great option for your site.

Ritratto, Italian for “portrait,” offers the perfect design for any kind of showcase, be it for yourself or your favorite historical figure. The prominent header area offers a headshot, large title, brief description, and links. Below that is a grid of posts that’s especially noticeable for its lack of featured image; perhaps counterintuitively, the text-heavy layout helps this theme stand out.

Sunderland is a simple theme designed for announcing upcoming events in a visually captivating way. Sunderland’s character lies in its immersive landing page, with an easily replaceable full-width background image. Sunderland is the ideal choice for bands, musicians, artists, or event organizers who want a sleek and eye-catching website to inform and engage their audience.

To install any of the above themes, click the name of the theme you like, which brings you right to the installation page. Then click the “Activate this design” button. You can also click “Open live demo,” which brings up a clickable, scrollable version of the theme for you to preview.

Premium themes are available to use at no extra charge for customers on the Premium plan or above. Partner themes are third-party products that can be purchased for $79/year each.

You can explore all of our themes by navigating to the “Themes” page, which is found under “Appearance” in the left-side menu of your WordPress.com dashboard. Or you can click below:

Bloganuary Is Just Around the Corner!

Democraten NU Democraten NU Almelo 15-12-2023 19:07

It’s hard to fathom, but we’re just a couple of weeks from 2024. It’s been a big year! WordPress celebrated its 20th birthday, “Barbenheimer” won big at the global box office, and generative AI tools for text and video broke through to the mainstream spotlight.

On WordPress.com, we’ve seen a good share of change, too. We launched a new education hub for our free courses and webinars. We made vast improvements to our domain offerings, such as multi-year registration, domain forwarding, and bulk updates. We also continue to regularly release beautifully designed themes and patterns, making it easier for you to create the site of your dreams.

Peering into the very near future, we’re thrilled to announce the return of Bloganuary for its third consecutive year! In January 2024, we’re inviting YOU to join the thousands of bloggers who have previously participated in this month-long writing challenge.

Participating in Bloganuary is a breeze. Each day in January offers a unique writing prompt, which will be displayed on your WordPress.com dashboard. Click “Post answer” to start a new post, which will automatically include the #bloganuary tag. Let these prompts inspire you to publish blog posts in whatever format you choose. Wordsmiths can write, artists can share their creations, photographers can post photographs–you get the gist.

In a world inundated with digital noise, blogging provides a sanctuary for authentic voices to emerge. Your own blog gives you the space to connect with your readers on a more genuine, human level, which is something that’s often hard to find on ad-filled, algorithmically-driven social media platforms.

To get the most out of this challenge and connect with other writers, follow the #bloganuary tag in the Reader and join the community site.

If you’ve been considering starting a new blog, take this as your sign that now is the write time! Bloganuary will not only be the perfect kickoff to establish a strong publishing habit, but it’ll also help you connect with a new audience and a global community of bloggers.

Use coupon code bloganuary2024 for 25% off new annual plans. Visit WordPress.com/start or click below to get started:

Engage a Wider Audience With ActivityPub on WordPress.com

Engage a Wider Audience With ActivityPub on WordPress.com

The fediverse has arrived at WordPress.com.

Matthias Pfefferle

Exciting times are here for all WordPress.com users! The revolutionary ActivityPub feature is now available across all WordPress.com plans, unlocking a world of engagement and interaction for your blog. Your blogs can now be part of the rapidly expanding fediverse, which enables you to connect with a broader audience and attract more followers.

Let’s dive into what this means for all WordPress.com blogs.

The fediverse consists of federated platforms like Mastodon, which are networks of independent websites or servers that can communicate with each other while still operating individually. It’s much like email; you can send emails to users with accounts on different services (like Gmail, Yahoo, etc.), yet all of them can interact seamlessly. Similarly, federated platforms enable users to follow, share, and interact with content across different services in a unified network.

ActivityPub is a WordPress plugin that facilitates seamless integration between your blog and a host of federated platforms, including Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, and more. This plugin empowers your readers to follow your blog posts on these platforms.

In addition, replies to your posts from these platforms are automatically turned into comments on your WordPress blog, creating a more interactive and dynamic conversation around your content. Synchronicity for the win!

Transform your blog into a fediverse profile

Your WordPress blog can now become a profile for the fediverse. This means your readers can follow you and receive all the latest posts from your blog directly on their preferred platform. More so, they can engage in enriching conversations by replying to your posts, with their replies reflecting as comments on your blog post, creating a synchronized and interactive experience.

On Free, Personal, and Premium sites, you can enter the fediverse through your settings (see how below); for Business and Commerce sites, simply install the ActivityPub plugin and follow the prompts to set up your profile.

From your blog’s dashboard, go to Settings > Discussion and activate the feature by toggling “Enter the fediverse.”

Make note of your default fediverse profile name. In the example above, it’s the alias openprotocolfanblog.wordpress.com@openprotocolfanblog.wordpress.com. Your alias will be unique to you, of course, and will be far more memorable with a custom domain! (More on that below.)

Follow your new profile on a federated platform, such as Mastodon.

Remember, this feature is applicable to new posts only; and it might take up to 15 minutes for new posts to appear on federated platforms.

Upgrading to a domain doesn’t just give your profile a professional touch:

A shorter custom domain is simply more memorable than the default name provided.

It ensures your profile is uniquely identifiable, making it easier for users across the fediverse to find and interact with your content.

With a custom domain you can easily move your entire fediverse connection to any host at any time.

Take advantage of this new opportunity to extend your blog’s reach, connect with diverse audiences, and create engaging dialogues. It only takes seconds to enable this simple yet powerful feature on WordPress.com. And remember, upgrading to a domain not only emphasizes your unique identity but also enhances profile portability. So, why wait? Dive in and showcase your content to the world!

When I go to Settings/Discussion on my Remium Blog I do not see a Fedeverse toggle and my Discussion Settings page does not look like the one in your post.

You might be using the wp-admin/classic view. Can you see the toggle here?

There’s a View option in the upper right, or you can use that link directly.

Didn’t know about that!, thank you!

You bet! That tool for switching can be quite handy. 🙂

When will WordPress Reader be able to follow Fediverse accounts?

Love this idea. We’ll share it with the team.

Love this idea we will share with friends

in need of security with emails and harm reduction please and thank you with the clergy_hierarchy

Is this post on the Fediverse, can I retoot this post?

I’m trying to follow my own blog from my personal Mastodon account and I’m seeing “Cancel Follow Request” whereas others on Masto just get to follow?

And today cancelling and following worked as expected.

Oh good! I took a quick look and wasn’t able to tell what that was about, but we’re glad to hear it’s working!

This is amazing. Does this also work with WordPress based podcasts too?

Great question! I am guessing it would work with any post, but we’ll see what we can find on that.

So it looks like the audio gets removed for now. We’ll have that on our minds for an update, though. Thank you for the request!

Any audio player in the post will now get properly attached to the federated version of the post! Or: yes 😄

This is very exciting for a more open/shared version of a social media future! Love it.

Good

Love this! Thank you for adding this capability in for WordPress.com accounts! It works and is so easy to setup.

Thanks for help ⚘

I already pay for a custom domain name can I use that one?

Is it available for free account on jetpack app?

Yes in did

This sounds cool. I recently started a new blog (again – don’t judge me lol) and am planning on getting a custom domain for it. I’ll have to make a Mastodon account to get into this fediverse thing and then I’ll set up the connection described here after I get a short domain name so that people can follow it. I think it’s great that wordpress.com has been working hard to provide alternate connections to other communities such as Mastodon since Twitter went crazy with it’s API requirements. Thanks!

We love to hear it. Thanks, David!

This is exciting. I signed up both my blogs with Fediverse.

These platforms are new to me but I’m always happy to have my site reach new audiences.

Hi word press i dont know how to contact u but everytime i try to get into my acount it says continue and when press it it reloods to continue again and agin please fix!!!! Btw im new

Welcome! I’m not sure I’ve seen what you’re seeing, but can you try reaching out in our forums with more context? Tag it with

After playing with this I have two observations: One, editing an older post sends it out into the Fediverse. Two, the plugin doesn’t seem to use the “excerpt” settings on posts.

Thanks for the feedback on this! We’ll share it with the team.

OK: here’s what I’ve learned! On plugin-enabled sites using our Business or eCommerce plans, you’ll be able to change the template to just share the excerpt if you’d like.

About it sharing older posts: that does happen, but it won’t show on most users’ feeds since it’s not new.

Will there be analytical data for content that is being served to this other platform?

There are no special stats implemented yet. Do you have something special in mind?

I would appreciate being able to see which of my posts made available on Mastodon have received impressions, views, or clicks. Anything that will help me determine the level of engagement my content is reaching. Depending on the data received, I may make editorial decisions that favor this other platform.

Thanks for that feedback!

My customization is telling me failed why??

We are not able to investigate here in the blog post comments but please contact us here and we are happy to take a closer look. Thanks!

When I use the link it says “free on Business Plan. Upgrade and activate.”

The plugin is only necessary for some sites, but not all. In the case of your site, you can find the Fediverse settings (described in the article above) by going here: https://wordpress.com/settings/discussion/

Once on that page, near the top is the switch you can click to “Enter the fediverse.”

I would just like to say that WordPress is an amazing site, and I’m very thankful that I took a chance on downloading the app and giving it a chance to show me and apparently many other people how to start their own websites and help promote their business or writing and getting published, etc.

I know you guys really don’t like us asking questions on your posts and I should probably ask in tbe forum, but so many are discussing this here anyway. So I’m curious about something? Once you set your blog up with the federated address, does your blog automatically send your posts out to Mastodon, or do you actually need to give people that address so they can follow you directly? I think maybe some more information in the Support pages about this would be very helpful, and again, thanks for making this possible.

If you just enable the integration, it won’t send anything to Mastodon or other platforms. You have to give your address to people/visitors first so that the integration knows who to send the posts to.

We have created a block for this case that helps your visitors to subscribe to your site. Just search for “Follow me on the Fediverse” when adding a new block.

We’re also working on better onboarding for this usecase right now, and will adjust the help accordingly as well.

Glad to see this… People marooned on social media islands, need to make the jump to their own domains.

Hi! Thank you for this amazing update!

I put my blog into fediverse one day ago using the discussion setup.

However, although I am able to follow the blog from different instances (both mastodon and pleroma), the newest blog post is not popping up on the fediverse timeline (after following the account of course).

Besides, the mastodon instance with above v4.2 (for example mastodon.social)is giving a error code 500 every time I open the blog profile on the local instance…

Is this a bug at this moment? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

This is a problem that came with Mastodon 4.2 and we are aware of it are searching for a fix. It seems to be only an issue with the Mastodon UI and does not break the functionality.

Hi Matthias, thank you very much for your reply!

I have published another post 2 days ago, it had no problem going on mastodon!!

However, I still can’t see the post from any pleroma instance… neither by following the blog, nor by searching the post link…

Having the same problem with my other blog. I take it we can’t do anything to fix this ourselves?

This is great and helps us collect reviews directly through this site.

The address seems overly long, but that’s not a too serious problem.

I was waiting so long for this and it’s finally out! Yipee. Thank you for your hard work and being supportive of the Fediverse.

I don’t have a store , I’m telling you for the fifth time stop charging me and refund last month’s payments. I paid for a tear and you are still taking 78 a month twice a month. I closed store 2 months ago. If I am charged again or not refunded we are going to Court. How many times are you gonna charge a person who closed 2 months ago. It was a total scam . […] I only had 1 store, realized it was a scam and closed. But you keep charging me even though I paid for a year. Check out my WordPress apps and see how many I paid that you have to refund. I DON’T HAVE A STORE FOLDED IT 2 MONTHS AGO. PLEASE STOP CHARGING AND REFUND LAST 2 MONTHS. THIS IS A JOKE!

We are not able to investigate here in the blog post comments but please contact us here and let us know the URL of your site, and we are happy to take a closer look. Thanks!

Just stop charging me I don’t want anything to do with WordPress

If you can’t manage your upgrades from this account here, Please use the form at wpchrg.com to locate the charge, then you’ll have an option to contact support about canceling.

Hey 👋👋 How I can Increase SEO without Plugs

Hi there, a great place to start is with our free self-guided course on SEO basics, which will show you how to optimize SEO using the built-in features on all WordPress.com sites. You can get started here!

Hey i have a question ❓ Crawling how effect the SEO and wht actually site maps do and if i index a few pages that i want them to rank ?

Hey there! Crawling is the process search engines use to index your site in order to display it in search results. A site map helps crawlers understand what is on your site and where to find it. You can find additional information about your sitemap here.

This is a really useful addition to WordPress, and to the Fediverse. Well done. I did follow the instructions and it seems to work, but when I try to follow my blog on Mastodon it says ‘Follow Requested’ and then I can’t authorise the follow either in WordPress or Mastodon. The Curator on my instance has suggested it is something to do with Auth_Fetch. I have tried Support (the answer from the AI was ‘I don’t know the answer’) and it is with the Forums, so all I can do is wait. However, it is an encouragement to improve the standard of my blog for those who can follow it. Thank you again. K #modlook

Influence the Future of WordPress by Taking the 2023 Annual Survey Today

Democraten NU Democraten NU Almelo 27-09-2023 18:13

I’ve been on WordPress for 18-20 (?) years. Occasionally I look for a better/different/easier platform, but nothing else offers as many design options. However, the constant WP changes, additions (“improvements”) have become increasingly difficult for me to understand/keep up with. I’m now 80 years old. New stuff is getting harder to learn. Lots of my older posts are just flat out broken because of all the changes. The switch to block editing has just about done me in. I love playing with page design and presentation (worked in publishing for 30 years) and like an occasional change just to keep things fresh. But I’m pretty well stuck now. I’ve yet to fully learn/understand my current theme (Saga), although I’ve been using it since March 2022, and I’m afraid that any theme change I attempt now will just break everything.

Please don’t forget us little guys, the bloggers, who use WP.com. So much of what you do now seems geared for businesses and commercial clients. Yes, I have a business plan, but I paid for it only to have the back-up protection and to keep my entire content from appearing on the Reader. There’s no point in working for hours to create a nice presentation when Reader users can read it all on the Reader.

I guess that’s the end of my rant. Just remember we little bloggers were your bread-and-butter once upon a time.

Fan the Flames of Blog Post Promotion: 5 Tips for Creating Compelling Ads on Our Blaze Network

Democraten NU Democraten NU Almelo 21-08-2023 17:16

If you haven’t yet tried out Blaze, our incredible advertising wizard that helps to promote your blog posts across the WordPress.com and Tumblr networks, there’s no better time than now.

The beauty of Blaze lies in its automation capabilities. Our tool effortlessly creates the initial ad draft for you, making use of your blog post’s title, its featured image, and a short excerpt of the post.

But to get the most out of Blaze, it’s worth taking a couple extra minutes to make sure the ad is compelling enough to be worth a visitor’s click. Blaze ads are fully customizable, allowing you to tailor them to better reach and resonate with your audience.

Let’s explore five proven ways you can maximize your ads’ impact.

It’s not enough to know who your audience is; you must also understand their language. By language, we mean the specific jargon, phrases, and expressions your target audience uses. Incorporating audience language into your Blaze ads makes them more relatable, thus increasing engagement.

For example, if your blog is about fitness, use phrases like “HIIT,” “macros,” or “strength training.” These are terms your audience will be familiar with, and seeing them in an ad will likely grab their attention.

While Blaze does an excellent job of selecting your post’s featured image for your ad, it doesn’t know the whole story. If you have a more impactful, compelling image, don’t hesitate to swap it out. Remember, a picture can speak a thousand words and can often be the difference between a user clicking on your ad or scrolling past it.

Blaze automatically uses your blog post title as the headline for your ad. However, you might want to consider creating a new, more compelling headline specifically for the ad. This headline doesn’t need to match your blog post title exactly; it just needs to capture attention and entice readers to want to learn more.

For instance, if your blog post title is “Top 10 Gardening Tips,” a more enticing ad headline could be, “Transform Your Garden With These Expert Tips.”

4. Craft a convincing call-to-action

While the post snippet gives readers a preview of your blog content, a strong call-to-action (CTA) can encourage users to engage further. For example, using words that imply exclusive benefits, such as “secret” or “new,” makes readers want to know more. In our gardening example, a CTA like “Discover the five simple secrets to a lush garden that only the pros know,” is enticing and gives readers a good reason to click on your ad.

Lastly, always remember the importance of testing different ad variations. Blaze’s customization capabilities allow you to try out other headlines, images, post snippets, and CTAs. You can even select different audiences to see which respond more favorably to your ads. See which combinations work best and refine your approach based on your learning.

Blaze is an incredibly powerful tool for boosting your blog post promotions, and with these customization tips, you can ensure your ads make the biggest splash possible. Don’t just set it and forget it—use Blaze to its fullest potential and watch your blog’s reach grow like never before.
