Forum: 70 Years Human Rights – Freedom of BeliefFreedom of Belief: Individual or Collective Identity?
On 9 April, the SIB, Liberal International and D66 Internationaal will host a forum to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Several speakers will discuss the tensions between (collective) freedom of religion on the one hand, and the rights to individual equality of women, LGBT persons and non-believers. They will focus on the situation in Western Europe as well as Northern Africa. Are people free to believe and do what they want? What is the situation for migrants or other persons with a foreign background? And what is the relationship between people's attitudes in the diaspora vs. their country of origin?
Author and former politician Boris van der Ham, member of the human rights committee of the Liberal International, will introduce the evening with a keynote speech. Van der Ham is a well-known public figure in the Netherlands. Until 2012, he was a Member of Parliament for D66. Since then, he has been active outside formal politics, as the chairman of the Dutch Humanist Association and an adviser to many other institutions. Van der Ham also works as a writer and an actor.
Moroccan politician Hatim Beggar will speak about the experience from his country. What is the current situation with the freedom of belief in Morocco? How do the social attitudes of Moroccan citizens differ from those of Moroccan immigrants in Europe? Beggar is a member of the Board of the 'Mouvement populaire' party, and has also been working as a lawyer and a university professor.
The event will end with a panel discussion. There will be contributions from Meryem Kaaboun, a free-thinking Moroccan student of public administration, and Alper Alasag from the Islam Knowledge Centre. Of course, there will also be room for questions from the audience.
