(English below) M:OED werkt aan een nieuwe start M:OED is in 2017 opgericht omdat we er van overtuigd zijn dat Maastricht veel aantrekkelijker kan worden voor al zijn bewoners. Na de succesvolle en energieke start in 2018 is het M:OED echter niet gelukt om de discussie over de toekomst van Maastricht in zowel de raad als daarbuiten goed vorm te geven. Eén van de oorzaken hiervan is dat Alexander Lurvink als fractievoorzitter van M:OED niet uit de verf bleek te komen. Alexander heeft veel voor M:OED betekend en een grote bijdrage geleverd aan het gedachtegoed van de partij, maar is hij voor ons nu niet de juiste man op de juiste plek. De algemene ledenvergadering heeft hem daarom gevraagd zijn positie ter beschikking te stellen en in een andere rol zijn bijdrage aan M:OED te blijven leveren. Alexander heeft echter besloten zijn raadszetel niet ter beschikking te stellen en door te gaan in de raad. Als reactie daarop heeft de partij het vertrouwen in hem opgezegd en zijn lidmaatschap beëindigd. We zien Alexander Lurvink dus niet meer als vertegenwoordiger van M:OED in de Maastrichtse gemeenteraad. Uiteraard blijft ons voornaamste doel om de initiator te zijn van de discussie over vernieuwing in Maastricht. De komende tijd zullen we bespreken hoe we hier beter vorm aan kunnen geven. Iedereen is van harte uitgenodigd om hieraan deel te nemen. /////// M:OED is working on a new start M:OED was founded in 2017 because we are convinced that Maastricht can become much more attractive for all its residents. However, after a successful and energetic start in 2018, M:OED was unable to shape the discussion about the future of Maastricht, both within and outside the council. One of the reasons for this is the fact that Alexander Lurvink, as party chairman of M:OED, did not appear to be able to stand out from the crowd. Alexander has meant a lot to M:OED and made a major contribution to the party's ideas, but for us he is not the right man in the right place at the moment. The general assembly therefore asked him to make his position available and to continue to make his contribution to M:OED in another role. However, Alexander has decided not to make his council seat available and to continue in the council. In response, the party withdrew its confidence in him and terminated his membership. This means we no longer see Alexander Lurvink as a representative of M:OED in the Maastricht City Council. Of course our main goal remains to be the initiator of the discussion about renewal in Maastricht. In the coming period we will discuss how we can shape this in a better way. Everyone is more than welcome to participate.

Gerard van Engelen JULIANADORP Zijn fantasiewereld doet die van de Baron van Münchhaussen verbleken. Hij zette jarenlang bekenden -en zijn eigen broer- op het verkeerde been met fantasieverhalen over een directiebaan op een geheime afdeling van het moederbedrijf van Ziggo/UPC. In werkelijkheid was hij al jaren werkloos. R. van S. (38) uit Julianadorp is maandag veroordeeld tot twee jaar celstraf wegens oplichting en valsheid in geschrifte. Hij heeft er al een half jaar opzitten. Zolang zit de meesterfantast uit Julianadorp al vast in de gevangenis van Schiphol. De rechtbank bepaalde maandag dat hij acht van de 24 maanden straf voorwaardelijk krijgt opgelegd. Van S. lichtte vijf mensen op. En hij dupeerde zijn broer en een kennis door hen een baan te beloven op zijn niet bestaande afdeling. Vooral zijn broer nam daardoor beslissingen waar hij spijt van heeft: hij zegde zijn baan op omdat hij in zijn nieuwe functie dertigduizend euro per maand zou gaan verdienen. Ook zijn vrouw nam ontslag. Samen besloten ze hun huis-in-aanbouw ’op te pimpen’. Het echtpaar zit nu financieel aan de grond. Een kennis van Van S. kreeg klussen -die ook uit de fantasie van Van S. ontsproten- waar hij zelfs voor betaald werd. Het geld waarmee Van S. zijn verzonnen status overeind hield leende hij van kennissen en (schoon-)familieleden. Die maakte hij wijs dat hij ’geskimd’ was waardoor hij niet bij zijn geld kon komen. Een oom van zijn toenmalige vriendin praatte hij bijna een ton uit de zak. Ook zijn eigen ouders werden slachtoffer, maar zij deden geen aangifte. Vervalste loonstrookjes Als geldschieters wantrouwend werden, kwam Van S. met vervalste loonstrookjes, bankbrieven en e-mails. Desnoods belde hij even met zijn ondergeschikten (hij improviseerde dan een gesprek) of hij gaf zich telefonisch uit voor een medewerker van Liberty Global. Dan zette hij een zwaardere stem op. De man leefde in hotels en zat overdag in casino’s voor gratis consumpties. De argwaan won: Van S. vond een zendertje onder zijn auto, hij werd bedreigd, er kwam een website waarop hij werd zwartgemaakt. Begin dit jaar barstte de zeepbel en gaf hij zich aan. Hij had het veel eerder willen doen, zei hij, maar was te bang geworden voor zijn schuldeisers. De rechter verklaarde een deel van de schadeclaims ’niet ontvankelijk’, wegens gebrek aan onderbouwing wat betekent dat de gedupeerden via een civiele procedure het geld moeten zien terug te krijgen.

First of all, what an honour to kick off the Connect Wageningen Stress Stories! This one time I had to give a speech for bachelor-graduates as president of one of Wageningen’s Study Associations. Knowing beforehand that I am pretty good at making myself too nervous for unnecessary things, I tried to keep it cool. And the days before the speech, I was relatively calm… However, on D-Day itself, I woke up and the first thing I thought was ”Shit”. Well, I started the day nervous and it only got worse. The whole day, I was in a state of the worst nerves ever and the only thing I ate that day was a slice of pizza and three strings of spaghetti. Big business or the local citizen? Who will reap the benefits of the energy transition in Maastricht? If the current plans of the municipality are continued, a massive blanket (+/- 50 football fields) of solar panels will appear over the fields north of the city in the coming years. In the council proposal of September 11th, the new solar field at Lanakerveld is called an "electricity production company". No fewer than 30 of the 32 hectares are made available for exploitation by (foreign) investors - for profit. The other two, good for the energy supply of 450 households, are issued to citizens on a long lease. At least, that is the desired situation. Practice has shown that support for large-scale projects such as these does not just come around. In order to involve citizens, the so-called ‘stadronde’ on this subject takes place on location in the neighbourhood (at community centre Manjefiek Malberg). During this meeting, EMEC (First Maastricht Energy Cooperative) has been invited to present its alternative vision on the energy transition in our city. The cooperative's vision-document was published yesterday and shows that many possibilities for sustainable energy production and citizen participation remain unused (think of the roofs of community centres and business premises in the inner city). The citizen association points to the advantages of a small-scale, phased and integrated approach to the energy transition in which the citizen invests and benefits, thus becoming less dependent on large energy producers. M:OED is in favour of the development of the Solar field, but strongly endorses EMEC's vision. The municipality must play a facilitating role in relation to energy cooperatives such as EMEC. There is a lot of money to be saved / earned with the energy transition and as far as we are concerned, that money remains in Maastricht, with the Maastricht citizen. What do you think, forward thinking followers? Can the plans of the municipality go together with the vision of EMEC? The climate problem is acute and we need to act quickly, but how do we ensure that citizens benefit? Wageningen is rich in locally organised social initiatives. One of them is community hub, THUIS. Thuis was founded 3 years ago and has since been a valuable contribution to Wageningen. It has evolved into a place for joint activities, where you can meet new people, and experience different cultures. Learning the local language is an essential element for integration. It helps closing the gap between internationals and local Wageningers. We are happy with the developments the university is taking, as many international students are eager to learn Dutch. However, in the financial planning of the municipality, Wageningen solely wants to invest in offering English courses; it is believed that there are currently enough Dutch courses available. Yet, Dutch courses at the WUR are not accessible for expats and other social groups, are often completely full, and remain expensive for high quality courses. Dutch lessons will be free for international students

Wageningen University wants to make it easier for international students to learn Dutch. That is why the university’s language institute Wageningen in'to Languages will start offering its Social Dutch courses free of charge in 2019.

THE DILEMMA OF RACISM IN THE NETHERLANDS In this country when you complain about racism, there is always somebody who comes to criticize you for being a racist yourself. The Dutch applaud seriously when especially another black person comes to criticize you for even pointing out that there is something wrong. And always there is a black person waiting for his 3 seconds of fame. You see here a racist is either a black man or an alien who drops in from the sky in the night and perform racist acts and then disappear. It is never a Dutch person. The poster of a man exorting people to vote PVV, a right wing party is illustrative of what we have to face as Africans here. It says stop the foreigners. They came here because they were hungry. More than half of them do not work. And now at the cost of the Dutch taxpayer, they want to earn huge salaries in politics. There are 137 candidates and all of them are foreigners. There is nothing in that statement that is true, absolutely nothing. But even to say that means you open yourself to insults.
